about
Free Beer was really a parody of oursleves. We never took anything seriously, we made fun of EVERYTHING and every one! I don't even know what inspired the wrting of this instrumental and who we might have been listening to at the time that inspired it but it's definitely so far out of the punk stuff that we did at the time. This was recorded in the same session as some of our more punk anthem tunes as well, so it wasn't as if our 'tastes' in music had changed over a period of time, we encompassed a lot of styles within this band. When we were in the recording studio (35 years ago? Holy jeez) I remember Tom Mallon (RIP) guru of recording punk bands in SF at the time saying "that song is an epic". Tommy Guerrero used to have this effect called a t-wah he used on bass on this song and it sounded like parts of the bass was under water, Dan Magee (guitarist) was always a jokester and said something like it sounds like a 'Tuna' (huh?). We didnt have a name for the song at the time so we just called it Tuna Epic as a working tiltle and really just never changed it. We were too busy trying to figure out how to play TV commerical jungles on guitar I suppose. It's crazy how you come up with names for songs sometimes.
Kick ass album. Not sure how I found it initially. Maybe via YouTube algo or something. Glad to finally own it, been listening on YT for years. Love the bonus track. orokro
A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
